The UK government's ban on under 16s using social media is a complicated subject. As a grumpa I would like my grandchild to be protected from the cesspits of Facebook, X, and the like. That said, as a total tech nerd I think it's rather silly to think a ban will work as they expect. From experience, kids are surprisingly resourceful and can make for expert shadow operators. Any ban will likely just push kids to be even more skilled. Not a bad thing I guess.

Just upgraded my old ThinkPad T470s from Fedora 43 to Fedora 44. The upgrade worked flawlessly, as I've come to expect from Fedora. This machine just keeps on going.

How do the Dutch football team get their kit so orange? It's proper orange. I'm not sure I've ever seen an orange that orange.

I'm not sure the World Cup officially starts until Brazil play their first game. That said, I'd love to see Morocco win this game. Also, it's about time an African team won the competition.

I'm really liking the hydration breaks in the World Cup games, they're perfect for fetching a fresh cuppa tea.

Watched Disclosure Day at the Vue cinema in Meadowhall. Brilliant movie, really enjoyed it.

Wishing the Canadian team the best of luck. Tonight is the night they they win their first ever World Cup game. Go Canada! 🇨🇦

I have migrated my Mastodon account to mastodon.social. Making the switch was simple enough and only took a couple of minutes. Looking forward to experiencing some vanilla Mastodon.

I'm not a huge football fan, but I do love to watch the World Cup (on TV from the comfort of my living room). Mexico vs South Africa should be a good opening game. I'd like to see either win the whole thing!

I finally snagged Diablo II on Steam last month when it was reduced, and it's genuinely perfect for the Steam Deck. I can play for a bit, suspend it, and when I restart, everything comes back flawlessly. It's a great find for any ARPG enthusiast.

Watching The Boroughs on Netflix. About half way through and thoroughly enjoying it so far.

Tonight, I cancelled my Dreamhost unlimited shared hosting account. I've had it since 2007, but I've barely used it myself for the last 14 years. I've mostly let a few friends use it for free to host their websites. The last website was removed from it today, so it's time to say goodbye. Thanks Dreamhost, you've been awesome!

Becky got a new M4 MacBook Air for Christmas. I spent this evening clearing out her old abandoned 12-inch Retina MacBook (2016). It still works beautifully, so I’ve backed it up and loaded it with Fedora 44, it’s now good to go.

I tinkered with OpenCode last night and it wasn't great. But today, running it inside Zed's terminal panel really improved the whole experience. It makes much more sense when used in combination with a real code editor. I haven't tested it on live projects yet, but I'm reasonably confident in it, given the right connection and model.

Experimenting with Ollama, OpenCode and Gemma 4. I'm not sure I understand the appeal of these tools and much prefer to use an editor like VS Code or Zed. I guess these types of tools are okay if you're purely vibe coding and not bothered about seeing the code that is being generated. Nevertheless, getting them working together was a fun exercise.

Having a go with Ollama and gemma4's vision features. It's been spot on with everything I've tested so far.

This morning, we've covered a wide range of topics, including dinosaurs, vehicles, animal life, trains, aviation, and classic recreational activities such as hide and seek. Grumpa is now knackered.

Spent more time with Zed editor this morning writing some system admin shell scripts with Ollama and gemma4:31b-cloud. Thoroughly impressed with the performance, speed and accuracy. The scripts were quite basic revolving around Git and Composer, but nevertheless it was impressive to watch.
